Name of Activity:

Beat the Grinch!!!

Purpose of Activity:

Students are encouraged to move safely about the entire gym on scooters, picking up bean bags one at a time, placing them in a basket. This is a good warm up activity to be used for the first 5-10 minutes of class. Students are practicing movement in general space as well as body awareness while balancing on the seat of the scooter.

Prerequisites:

Students need the ability to safely ride on a scooter while seated.

Suggested Grade Level:

K-5

Materials Needed:

Santa hat, green pinnie, (the Grinch is green), scooters (one per student), cones to mark the Grinch's path, basket for the beanbags, 50+ beanbags.

Description of Idea

Students gather in the middle of the gym, seated on their scooters. A circle marked on the floor works well as a gathering place. The Grinch is chosen by the teacher, and given the hat and pinnie to wear. He or she then moves to a designated starting point. Meanwhile the teacher has scattered at least 50 beanbags around the gym in a random pattern. The students are told that the Grinch has stolen Christmas (the gifts), but that his bag has torn open, scattering the presents around the gym.

The teacher has marked out a route for the Grinch to travel around the gym using cones. The Grinch will make three laps. He or she must travel the route before the rest of the students pick up all the gifts and put them in the basket (gift sack) in the middle of the gym. The Grinch attempts to complete his laps before the gifts are all gathered. After all the bean bags are picked up, or after the Grinch completes the laps, a new Grinch can be selected if time allows.

Variations:

If a large number of bean bags are not available, then fleece balls or stuffed animals could be used.
To expand this activity, the teacher can vary the way the students move on the scooter. They can start out by sitting, then lie on their tummy and use arms and legs to propel, and/or they can sit on their lower legs and use only arms to propel.

Assessment Ideas:

The teacher can assess with a checklist the students' ability to move safely in general space.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities

This game can be adapted to include vision impaired, wheelchair bound, mentally and behaviorally challenged students. Rules are adaptable to the makeup of the class. For example, the number of laps the Grinch takes can be changed, the method of carrying beanbags can be modified, and the method of travel on the scooters can be adapted according to the needs of the student.
