Name of Activity:
Paper Plate Ring Toss
Purpose of Activity:
The purpose of this activity is to improve performance in frisbee throwing, catching using an object, and to build teamwork skills.Prerequisites:
Students will be familiar with tossing a frisbee and catching using another object prior to doing this activity.Suggested Grade Level:
3-5Materials Needed:
Pool noodles, paper plates (with center cut out), basketsDescription of Idea
Students will be paired up. One partner holding a pool noodle and the other holding 5 paper plates with the center circle cut out. Standing approximately 10 feet apart, the student with the paper plates will toss them toward the person with the pool noodle. The student with the pool noodle will then try to catch the frisbee/paper plates onto the noodle without touching the plates. If one is dropped, the first student will collect them and throw again. Once all plates are on the noodle, both students will move (maybe another locomotor movement other than running like sliding, galloping, etc.) to the opposite end of the gym and deposit the plates into a designated bucket without using their hands. Once this has been completed, they will skip back to their starting position.
Assessment Ideas:
Observe students for progress and improvement in catching and throwing as they play the game. Ensure that students are working as a team throughout the activity.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities
Students who are unable to throw can put the plates onto the noodle directly instead of tossing.
Students who are unable to run or walk may have their bucket placed next to them instead of running across the gym.
Students may do sit ups or another upper-body exercise in place of running if they are unable to run.
