Grouchy Ladybug Stations
Purpose of Activity:
Students will make connections with the story "The Grouchy Ladybug" by Eric Carle and movement. Students will practice throwing, catching, striking and will participate in an obstacle course while incorporating literacy and telling time.Prerequisites:
Students have been taught or been exposed to the story of "The Grouchy Ladybug" or participated in the movement exploration lesson "The Grouchy Ladybug" (See video below)Suggested Grade Level:

Racket station: Pink balloons with Ladybugs drawn on & Paddles
Scoops station: Task cards, scoops, red balls with Ladybugs drawn on them
Catching station: Task cards, red beanbags with Ladybugs drawn on, Ladybug bean bags or balls
Obstacle course: Task cards, small hoops, beanbags, polly spots, hurdles, tunnel, balance beam, swinging rope
Description of Idea
This is a literacy based lesson and it incorporates the math concept of telling time.
Grouchy Ladybug Stations were designed to reinforce some of the movements from the Grouchy Ladybug movement exploration lesson based on Eric Carle’s story “The Grouchy Ladybug" and to work on manipulative skills. This lesson supports literacy in the classroom and touches on the math concept of telling time. When rotating stations students can use movements from the movement exploration lesson. Obstacle course station follows the order of animals met by the Grouchy Ladybug
Yellow Jacket: hopscotch in hoops
Beetle: twist on beanbags (movement from exploration lesson)
Praying Mantis: walk on poly spots with hands folded (movement from exploration lesson)
Sparrow: fly (jump) over hurdles
Lobster: crab walk (movement from exploration lesson)
Skunk: move through a tunnel
Boa Constrictor: move on belly like a snake (movement from exploration lesson)
Hyena: while walking on a beam, laugh eerily and step over a hyena (picture or stuffed animal).
Gorilla: hold a tree pose on a beam (movement from exploration lesson)
Rhinoceros: rhinoceros hop through hoops (hand on forehead for horn, hand on backside for tail) (movement from exploration lesson)
Elephant: elephant walk (movement from exploration lesson)
Whale: swing on a rope over a whale (stuffed animal or picture). Could leap if you did not have a rope.

The racket striking station works on the manipulative skill of striking using a paddle. Create a net using cones and ropes or use a mat. Draw a ladybug on a pink balloon for each net. Have various size balloons to give a variety of challenge levels.
Scoop catching station works on the manipulative skill of catching with an object.
Use purchased scoops or make scoops from gallon water jugs. Draw a ladybug on pink bouncy balls. There are three level: to self, to wall and to a partner.

The partner catch station works on the manipulative skills of throwing and catching.
Place animal/time cards on a wall in order of time with the Yellow Jacket/6:00 and the Beetle/7:00 in the middle. Even times on one side and odd times on the other. I have a variety of Ladybug beanbags for students to catch. You could draw a ladybug on a red beanbag.
Students line up adjacent to the animal pictures and start at the Yellow Jacket and Beetle. After 3 consecutive catches one student backs up, in order of animal/time on card. Play continues and a student backs up after 3 consecutive catches. Pairs try to make it to the Elephant/4:00 and the Whale/5:00.

Obstacle Course Station Card Examples
Assessment Ideas:
Ask what level the students achieved at the scoop station.
Ask how far apart, by time or animal, did they get to at the catch station.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities
Larger equipment for catching. Larger balloon at the paddle station.
