Name of Activity:

Jellyfishing Scarf Catching

Activity cues:

Focus on catching cues like bending arms, bringing to body, eyes on scarf.

Suggested Grade Level:

K-5

Materials Needed:

One scarf per student.

Description of Idea

The students will be like SpongeBob and Patrick who love to go jellyfishing. Have students find a good self space in the activity area. Every student has nothing in one hand and scarf in the other. They will tiptoe around the playing area until the teacher yells "Jellyfish!" The students will have to throw their scarves as high as they can and then walk to someone else's scarf and attempt to catch it in their hand. It does not matter whose scarf they try to catch, but everybody catches or picks up one and gets ready to tiptoe around for the next round. You can change the locomotor movement they do when they are either tiptoeing or trying to catch the scarves by saying "next time we catch a jellyfish we will skip to it".

Variations:

As students get the hang of this and they are safe you could have them catch the scarf with a scoop. Just make sure they are safe when moving and walking is best.

Love this game! I had the students pair up and move around the playing area with their partner. When I yelled "Jellyfish", they had to catch their partners scarf.
