Title of Bulletin Board: How I Exercised Over the Summer Bulletin Board

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials: Large bulletin board space and template.

Description:

This bulletin board was made by the students in grades PreK - 1st. It is a way to reinforce staying active and healthy when not at school. The students drew a picture (using this template of how they exercised their bodies during the summer. We discuss exercising the mind also, but explain we are looking for an activity that helped their heart stay strong. Once all the worksheets were completed they were hung in the main hallway of the school. I have the students write their name at the top of the worksheet and, on the bottom, they write their grade and section at the bottom. In addition, they (or I) write the name of the activity.

As the students shared their pictures with their classmates, it helped other students to learn new activities, and also learn how their classmates stayed active over the summer. I like this bulletin board since it was made by the students. Parents, faculty and visitors to the school see the pictures displayed in a very public space and see our commitment to being active.

I did a similar one with the teachers. I emailed the entire staff to send me a picture of them being active over the summer. I posted them on the gym "Activity Board". The students like seeing their teachers in a different way and it teaches them that being active is a healthy lifestyle for everyone.
