Name of Activity:

The Quiet Game

Purpose of Activity:

To encourage students to stay quiet in line while exiting the gymnasium.

Prerequisites:

Rules of lining up are: staying quiet, eyes on teacher, hands to self, and in a straight line.

Suggested Grade Level:

K-2

Description of Idea

As the kids are lining up and while they are in line, the teacher says, "the Quiet Game starts in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and then performs a CLAP (children may clap too).  This clap means it is to be absolutely quiet from now until the time they leave the gym (and beyond if needed).

You may want to think about having a class challenge for the "Quiet Game". For instance every time a class goes from the gym back to their class without anyone breaking the quietness then that class (e.g., Mrs. Smith's 1st grade class) earns one Quiet Game point. Keep this score for a month and then that class gets some kind of reward (free choice period, etc.).
