Name of Activity:

The Sunshine Board

Purpose of Activity:

To motivate students so that they or their entire class may sign the "Sunshine Board".

Suggested Grade Level:

3-5

Materials Needed:

Yellow butcher paper to cover the entire door and 2 markers.

Description of Idea

At the beginning of the school year, I get yellow butcher paper and tape it to the inside of my office door (equipment room) in the gymnasium. I draw a big circle and make long and short lines so that it looks like a sun. Inside the circle I write Mrs. Giltner's sunshine board and which 6 weeks marking period it is. I hang two black markers by string and tape close by the door so they can be used to sign their names. I allow students to sign for many reasons (good sport, encouraging, accomplished a task, etc.) and sometimes I'll write the class name (e.g., Mrs. Barber - 3B) if the entire class does something well. At the end of each 6 weeks, I take the paper down and hang it beside the office door so parents can see it.
