Early in the school year, I was teaching all of the Kindergarten children that as soon as they arrive in my class they should check that their shoes are tied tightly. One little girl proudly unzipped her shiny new VELCRO shoes, pulled them a little tighter, smoothed the velcro back together, then announced, "Mr. Kane, I do not need learn how to tie these shoes...I'm wearing VELVET!"
