Name of Activity:

Ogre Land

Suggested Grade Level:

1-2

Materials Needed:

Hoops, cones, pool noodles.

Description of Idea

Set Up - Place enough hoops (castles) in a row long enough so you have only 3 students per hoop. Twenty yards away place four cones in an 8' x 8' square (Ogre Tower). Scatter treasure (cut up pool noodle chips) throughout open space between castles and the Ogre Tower. Each group of three students line up behind a castle. Choose 2-3 Ogres with tentacles (noodle halves).

How to play - Explain to students that they will all become treasure hunters but that they must be careful because the treasure is guarded by Ogres with long tentacles. If a student is tagged by an Ogre, they must go to the Ogre Tower. Students can escape by doing five jumping jacks. Only one treasure hunter from each castle can leave at a time and they can only pick-up one piece of treasure at a time. Before the treasure becomes too scarce stop the game and have all castles count their treasure. Have fun throwing the treasure back in the field and play again.

Variations:

Allow more than one from each hoop to look for treasure

Vary locomotor skills, pathways, directions

My older students (2nd - 3rd) have added more characters such as Wizards, knights and royalty with different roles in the game.
