Name of Activity:
Purpose of Activity:To give students the opportunity to practice their chasing, fleeing, and dodging skills in a fun holiday game situation.
Prerequisites:The ability to move safely (avoiding others) through general space, know how to safely tag, and locomotor skill knowledge.
Suggested Grade Level:4-5
Materials Needed:6-8 poly spots (or bases), 25-50 bean bags, 2 pinnies, 2 boxes or baskets to hold bean bags, 3 hula hoops
Description of Idea
Mark off a large rectangular activity area or use the boundary lines that you already have. Spread the poly spots (or bases) out throughout the playing area. On one sideline place 2 hula hoops (this is the empty chocolate box). On the opposite sideline place one hula hoop (this is Cupid's base). At one end of the gym (in the middle) place the beanbags (known as the valentines/chocolates) in a box on the endline. At the other end of the gym place an empty box on the endline (this box is where the students place the rescued valentines (bean bags).
Select two students who will be the taggers and each one wears a pinney. They are named the "Huggers" and the "Kissers" (1 student is "hugs" the other is "kisses" - as in Hershey's chocolate kisses). The two taggers stand in the center circle of the gym to start the game. Then select one student to be "Cupid" and have them stand in the one hula hoop (Cupid's safety zone) on the sideline. The rest of the class is lined up on the endline opposite the box of valentines (bean bags).
The object of the game is to see how fast the class can rescue the valentines (bean bags) by avoiding the taggers (Hugs & Kisses). Start the game by having the students WALK first, then add various locomotor movements later. Running is not a good choice for safety reasons for this game.
If a student is tagged by a hugger or kisser they must go to the empty chocolate box (the 2 hula hoops on the sideline) and if they had a valentine (bean bag) they must return it to the box. The student may rejoin the game once they are tagged back in by Cupid. The only "safe" zones in this game are the poly spots (bases). The student may only be on a base for 10 seconds or less and may only use one base for each trip (down and back). Therefore, students may not base hop (go from one base to another and so on). Only one student per base is allowed. Also, the taggers cannot "guard" the bases and Cupid may not use the bases as a safety zone.
The game continues until: 1) all of the valentines (bean bags) are rescued or 2) Cupid gets tagged outside of the safety zone (hula hoop).
Once the game is over pick new huggers and kissers and a new Cupid.
Observe students' ability to move safely in general space.
Observe the teamwork used by ALL students against the huggers and kissers.
Observe each students' ability to correctly perform the locomotor skills called out.
Allow only Cupid and the taggers to run. The other students must perform the locomotor skill (if they run they go to the empty chocolate box).
Have the students walk, skip, gallop, slide, etc. as opposed to running. The results will be much better and the game is safer.
Give more than one choice on the locomotor movement that may be performed (i.e. skip or gallop).
Remind students of safety when moving especially toward the end lines. After each game talk about how well the students are working together or chasing and fleeing. Give tips about how they could do better.
