### Purpose of Activity:

To teach locomotor skills while learning math facts at the same time.

### Prerequisites:

Some prior knowledge of locomotor skills and math facts.

5-8 Red Pinnies
5-8 Blue Pinnies
5-8 Orange Pinnies
5-8 Yellow Pinnies
15 Red Plastic Ball (Numbered 1-15)
15 Blue Plastic Balls (Numbered 1-15)
15 Orange Plastic Balls (Numbered 1-15)
15 Yellow Plastic Balls (Numbered 1-15)
4 Collection Buckets
4 Sets of Locomotor Skill/Math Fact Cards (15 Cards per Set)

Locomotor Skills

### Description of Idea

This activity consists of four teams: Red Team, Blue Team, Orange Team and Yellow Team. Each team should consist of 5-8 players, depending on the size of the class. Each team is assigned to a different corner of the gym. Each team has 15 numbered same color balls scattered about in the center of the gym floor (60 balls total will be placed in the center of the gym floor).

On signal the first player will draw a card from his or her team’s deck of cards. The player will then solve the math problem on his or her own or with the help of teammates (the student decides if they want help). Once the math problem is solved, the player will perform the locomotor skill listed on the card while retrieving his or her team’s color ball that contains the number of the math problem solved. After returning the correct ball to the team bucket, the next team member draws a card and repeats the process. The activity continues until all balls have been returned to the bucket. Note: If a player brings the incorrect ball back, his team must redo the problem (or a problem). The team that collects and places all of their balls in their collection bucket first wins gets to split up and go to the other teams and try to help them with their progress by rooting them on or by actually helping. It they want to help they must get permission from that team to help.

Teaching Suggestions:

Informal observation used to see if teams are solving math problems correctly and students are performing the locomotor skill correctly. A teacher checklist can also be used to assess students as they perform the locomotor skills.
