Name of Activity:

Squad Job Descriptions and Evaluation (Class Management)

Purpose of Activity:

To help with job responsibilities for smoother transitions and building greater responsibility within the classroom.

Prerequisites:

Knowledge of job expectations and rubric for squad member assessment.

Suggested Grade Level:

6-8

Materials Needed:

Clipboards with paper; names of each squad member and job assignments, rubric, equipment for each activity; fitness cards for each squad.

Description of Idea

Students will be divided into squads and each squad member will pick a job. Jobs will change weakly thereby allowing everybody to get to administer each job eventually which is especially important for the job of "evaluator". Knowing that everybody will become an evaluator at one time will lead to less partisanship. Shifting the responsibilities of all these jobs to the students will lead over time to less time spent with management issues and will allow students to take more responsibility for their learning.

Squad Job descriptions (These jobs change weekly):

A. Attendance keeper: Take attendance for your squad and let teacher know who is absent.

B. Exercise Leader: Pick up exercises for the day and lead your squad in the activity.

C. Timer/counter/clockwatcher: Inform group when exercise time is up.

D. Equipment pickup and set up: Get equipment and set it up for the activity.

E. Equipment clean up: Put equipment away or replace equipment for the next class period.

F. Peer job evaluator: Evaluate each squat member on their job performance and turn the evaluation in to the teacher.

Variations:

Have peer helpers as needed. Trade jobs if a person can not carry out their assigned job.

Assessment Ideas:

Squad #_________

Job Evaluation rubrics: (1-poor job, 2-ok job, 3 good job, 4 excellent job.) Put last name on line. Circle the number you feel is deserved.

A. Attendance Keeper __________________ 1 2 3 4
