Title of Bulletin Board: Did You Know?

Category: Health

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: Hand and footprints, letters, human body trivia facts

This is a great bulletin board to place near an exit where the students line up to leave class. They love to read the random facts while they are waiting to leave. I found various trivia facts about the human body, that students find really COOL, but they are informative as well. Facts that I used included:

-A human being loses an average of 40-100 strands of hair a day.
-A sneeze can exceed the speed of 100mph.
-An average human drinks about 16,000 gallons of water in a lifetime.
-Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood we have only 206 in our bodies.
-Blondes have more hair than dark-haired people.
-Every person has a unique tongue print.
-Fingernails grow faster than toenails.
-It takes 17 muscles to smile---43 to frown.
-A human scalp has 100,000 hairs.
-In a lifetime the average US resident eats more than 50 tons of food and drinks more than 13,000 gallons of liquid.
-A fingernail or toenail takes about 6 months to grow from base to tip.

I use these same ideas at the end of class. We call them "fun facts". I tell the kids a fun fact and then the next time they come to PE I ask who remembered the fact. If they get the answer correct, they receive a "white slip" that goes in a drawing for prizes every 8 days.
