PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Funny Bone

Category: Health

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: Plastic Skeleton, Skeleton Jokes, Graphics, Black Bulletin Board Paper

I use this skeleton as a teaching tool about the Human Body. I have my students point to the wrist, elbows, knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, skull, and rib cage. I ask then what the skull protects and what organs protect the rib cage. We discuss the jokes ending with the joke about a skeletons favorite drink (milk). This leads into a discussion of Healthy Food Choices. Finally we play My Pyramid Tag from PE Central. The next time we meet I follow up the lesson with the book, A Book About Your Skeleton, by Ruth Belov Goss.

Jokes used :

What do you call a skeleton who won't work? Lazy bones
Why didn't the skeleton cross the road? He didn't have the guts.
What did the skeleton complain of? Aching Bones
Why don't skeletons like parties? They have no body to dance with.
Why did the skeleton run up a tree? Because a dog was after his bones.
What is a skeletons favorite drink? Milk - it's so good for the bones!!
Why did the skeleton pupil stay late at school? He was boning up on his SOLs!!
