PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: How Fast Did Your Heart Beat Today

Category: Fitness

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials: Cut outs of a human heart and the "symbol" of a heart. Also, lettering that says "How Fast Did Your Heart Beat Today"; Super Fast Race Car Speed; The Speed Limit; Highway Speed

This was not on a bulletin board, as we did not have one at the time. We posted it on a door. We posted two signs; one showing a picture of a REAL human heart and one a picture of the SYMBOL of a heart. We discussed the difference between the two, as well as where the heart is located inside our bodies. At the end of each PE class the children move one of the smaller hearts (which were cut outs with magnets on them) to either Superfast Racecar; Speed Limit; or Highway Speed. This activity only took a couple of seconds as the children were lining up. It proved to be very motivating! The message was used to promote learning about fitness (how and why you want to "exercise" your heart) and to challenge our smaller students to "Move" more during class so they could have their heart race like a Superfast Race Car!
