Title of Bulletin Board: Race To 30
Category: Behavior Incentives
Suggested Grade Level: k-5
Materials: Poster board, racing track duct tape, cars, racing accessories
Each time a class comes into the gym they have a chance to earn up to 5 points. They earn points by working together as a team, following directions, cooperating, and being a good friend. They earn points for their warm-up activity, listening during directions, and other activities throughout the class. At the end of the class students give a drum roll and I relay to them how many points they earned as a class that day. I make sure that I never punish the class as a whole for one or two individual students. I then pick one student to move their class car on the race track. When the individual class gets to 30 points, each student gets a prize. I bought tennis shoe shaped charms that go on their shoe laces from Fitness Finders for their first prize. I stress to the students that it doesn't matter if other classes get 30 first, your class receives the prize when your class reaches 30 points. Once classes get 30 and receive a prize, they start over and work towards 30 again.
This has worked really well with management and teaching students to work together as a team. I tell them that just like on a sports team we all have to work together to "win" the prize. I have seen students encouraging others to do their best, cooperate and listen and follow directions. The students really enjoy doing the drum roll at the end of each class in anticipation of the points that they hope to earn!As you can see in the image each class has their own "race" lane, I created posters for each grade level with class names at each lane.
