Title of Bulletin Board: What's On Your Plate?

Category: Nutrition

Suggested Grade Level: K-3

Materials: Construction Paper, Markers

During our nutrition unit, students in 1st Grade created a healthy meal place-mat, illustrating a healthy meal. During the activity, students demonstrated their knowledge of nutrition by creating a meal using all five food groups (vegetables, fruits, dairy, protein and grains), and a minimum of fats, sugars and salts. Students were encouraged to prepare these healthy meals at home with their family. Students also used the "My Plate" as a reference for serving size as they chose their favorite healthy meal.

The place-mats were made by cutting strips of colored construction paper and adhering them to a piece of white paper. Some students added utensils, and some split up their plate like the My Plate to help them with serving size. On the strips of construction paper, students wrote their name, like this: "Sam's Health Plate"
