PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Mileage Walk/Run Club-Baseball Diamond

Category: Motivation

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: bulletin board paper, poster board paper, circle cut outs, shoe design

This bulletin board is a motivational board to encourage walking/running during daily recess. The activity encompasses the Chesapeake Public Schools Health and Physical Education Curriculum Overview 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, 4.3 and 5.3 by Expressing a Willingness to be Physically Fit.

We have a quarter mile course set up in the back of our school where students can walk/jog during recess. This activity is completely optional for students’ 1st -5th grade. If interested, a student gets a Mileage Card. Each card has 20 markings “feet” on the card, (each foot represents ¼ mile,) an area for the students name and teacher. The cards are kept in an index file box, next to the recess doors. When a student completes a ¼ mile their teacher initials a foot on the card. A completed card is five miles. Once they complete five miles they receive a foot charm (find at, their name goes up on the baseball diamond (1st base/first quarter, etc.) and they receive an “extra PE day.” The diamond is divided into quarters so each student must complete at least five miles each quarter or the time period allotted to receive the extra PE day. If a student completes all four bases they will be invited at a “smoothie party” at the end of the year where we will give smoothies out to those who have completed twenty-plus miles.

Additional Information:

To construct the “baseball diamond” I used green bulletin board paper and made a diamond. I then created bases with poster paper (I actually had to add on to the bases due to larger than expected participation!) Each base has a time limit based on quarters. Each quarter I cut out different baseball designs and write the students name on the design to show their accomplishment. If they complete more than five miles each quarter I just add more balls/shoes to their name. The chart is updated daily/weekly, and will run through the whole school year.
