Name of Activity: Passports

Purpose of Activity: To have the students be responsible for their own pass if they ever need to leave the room to go to their locker or to the bathroom. A secondary purpose is to have the students be responsible for the number of times they leave the room in a given time period (marking period, semester, year, etc.)

Prerequisites:

  1. the students must know that they will not be allowed to leave the room without the passport.
  2. The students must know that they will only be issued one passport for the given time period.
  3. The students must know that once they run out of spaces on the passport it is expired.

Suggested Grade Level: 6-9

Materials Needed: A passport for each student is needed. A passport is a piece of thick paper or cardstock. It should have a place on it for the student to sign his/her name. It should be numbered from 1 to ? (the number of times you think is acceptable for a student to leave the room in the given period). It should also indicate the time period on the passport.

Description of Idea

Give each student a passport and tell each student to sign it in ink. Tell them that they must present the passport to you each time they want to leave the room. Your job is to sign the passport at the first space the first time the student uses the passport. Continue this process each time the student wants to leave the room.

Assessment Ideas:

You can ask the students (towards the end of the time period) what they learned and practiced from using the passport system. This is also a good time to discuss "natural consequences" because some students may have lost their passport. They may have been refused permission to leave the room if they did not have their passport.
