Name of Activity: Three Faces of Behavior

Purpose of Activity: To encourage students to think about the inappropriate behavior they exhibited in physical education class.

Prerequisites: Students should have a clear understanding of what the class rules and expectations are.

Suggested Grade Level: 2-5

Materials Needed: 3 faces on large yellow paper. 1 with a frown, 1 with a straight face, and 1 with a smiley face.

Description of Idea

Place the three different faces in different locations around the gym. These should be placed at children's height levels. If a child is having difficulty following our classroom rules and expectations, he/she is sent to the frown, where they are to regain self control.

On their own they move to the straight face to think about what they did that was wrong and what they should or could have done in the situation they were faced with. When they are through thinking and can show self control, they move to the smiley face and wait to be invited back to class.

When invited back, they go to the teacher where the teacher asks what they did and what they should have done. If satisfied with the answer they are welcomed back to the class. This puts the responsibility for acceptable behavior on the child. This has worked great for years.
