Name of Activity:
Snowman Tag
Purpose of Activity:
The purpose of this activity is for students to have fun using a variety of locomotor skills, while dodging and fleeing "taggers." Also, cooperation and teamwork play an important role in this tag game.Prerequisites:
Students have previously been instructed in the basic rules of tag, which are: keep your personal space while moving in the general space, stay in bounds, stay on your feet, and keep your eyes on the other runners.Suggested Grade Level:
K-2Materials Needed:
2 Blue Pinnies, 2 Yellow Pinnies, 4 cones to mark boundaries. More pinnies may be used if classes are larger than 20 students.Description of Idea
The teacher selects 2 students to wear blue pinnies, representing "snowflakes" and 2 students to wear yellow pinnies, representing the "sunshine." The students wearing the blue pinnies are "it," and the students wearing the yellow pinnies are "unfreezers." On the whistle, the teacher calls out a locomotor skill, (for example: skip, gallop, hop, jump, or side step) for the students to perform. The students who are wearing the blue pinnies try to tag the others. When tagged, the student must stand with their hands out to their sides (fingers spread) like a snowman. It's the job of the students who are wearing the yellow pinnies to unfreeze or "melt" the students who are frozen. The students wearing blue pinnies cannot tag the students who are wearing the yellow pinnies. Rotate "snowflakes" and the "sunshine" often.
Assessment Ideas:
This game works really well if you need to assess pre/post locomotor skills. Assessments can be conducted without the children even knowing! No one has to be embarrassed, and the assessments are genuine.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities
Partner all students up with a "buddy" so those with handicapping conditions get the assistance needed, yet they are still treated the same as all others.
