Name of Activity: Beginning of School Rules Assignment

Purpose of Activity: To learn and understand the rules and procedures in the gym for the school year.

Prerequisites: Information about the class rules.

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: Two posters, with the following rules listed on them:

  • Raise hand, listen
  • Responsibility
  • Excellent effort
  • Equipment, treat well
  • Sportsmanship
  • Safe and positive class
  • Positive statements
  • Practice skills
  • Exercise
  • Encourage others
  • Considerate of others
  • Cooperation
  • Teamwork
  • Together we learn
For grades K-1, I also have the rules on a piece of paper to take home.

Description of Idea

I go over what I call the "Respect and Responsibility" rules during the first class of the year. I have 2 posters with this information outside the door of the gym.

At the end of each class, I give each child a small piece of paper with the assignment on it.

"You need to think about the "Respect and Responsibility" rules that are posted in the gym. Bring in a picture that you have drawn, found in a magazine or newspaper, OR taken of friends and family that shows one of these rules. If you participated in or watched a sporting event this summer, your picture can show how these rules apply. You will be ready to talk about it to the class. K-2 will write one or two sentences (with help if necessary) and 3-5 will write two or three sentences about the picture. Make sure that your name and class are on the picture."

Assessment Ideas:

In the second class of the year, I have each child tell about the picture as we discuss the rules.

Teaching Suggestions:

I put the assignment on colored paper, so it is easy to see.

My rules posters have the first letter in bold print so that "respect" is highlighted.

I post the pictures in the gym and the cafeteria, then return them to the children.
