Purpose of Activity: As a warm-up activity to increase the heart rate while chasing and fleeing in a who-liday atmosphere. Prerequisites: Locomotor skill knowledge and the ability to move through general space safely. Suggested Grade Level: 3-5 Materials Needed: Cones to mark off a large rectangle area, vests or pinnies and at least 4 (green) yarn balls. Green is optional. Description of Idea Mark off a large rectangle area in the activity or use the boundary lines that you may already have. Select 4 or 5 students to be the "Grinches" and designate them by having them carry a green yarn ball. I make sure to have one grinch per 5 students. Then select 4 students to be the "Helpful Whos" and designate them with a pinnie or vest. They will each stand outside one of the sides of the rectangle. The rest of the students are the other Whos in Who-ville. Start the tag game by having the students walk first. If a grinch tags a "Who" they must freeze until a "Helpful Who" comes out to rescue them. The "Helpful Who" leads them by the hand behind the cones and they must sing the first line of a Christmas song together such as "Deck the Halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la la la la la la." Then the "Who" that was frozen may rejoin the game. When a "Helpful Who" and a "Who" are holding hands they may not be tagged by the grinches. Also a "Helpful Who" may only be tagged if they are in Who-ville which is the large playing area. They may not be tagged outside the cone area. I also remind the students to use their manners and say thank you when a "Helpful Who" rescues them. I change Grinches and "Helpful" Whos every few minutes. Variations: You may also play any music from the "Grinch" soundtrack if you have it. When you stop the music the students freeze and you change roles. You could also read the book, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss or ask the classroom teacher to read it. I have a "Great Grinch's Get-A-Way" fun run and I use this activity as a warm-up! Assessment Ideas: Listening to hear if students are using good manners. Observe students' ability to move safely in general space. Teaching Suggestions: Switch Grinches and "Helpful Whos" often! Use walking at the beginning and possibly the whole game. |
