Name of Activity:
Manners
Purpose of Activity:
To teach students a variety of manners, help students become aware of their behaviors and choices and to provide a positive place for the students to think about their choices.Prerequisites:
At the beginning of the year we discuss the manners we should display in class, school and outside of school.Suggested Grade Level:
K-2Materials Needed:
Large pictures of different manners displayed and short positive sayings on the pictures. Such as Listen, Raise your hand, Be Helpful, Cooperation, Put things away nicely etc.Description of Idea
I post the manners in a straight row across the gym wall. In the beginning of the year we make a straight line in front of the manners and repeat the sayings on each picture. When we do this, the students pretend to act out different sports. When I say get ready with your soccer ball, the student stand ready to kick. Then I'll say the manner i.e. "I will be a good listener". The students repeat the manner and then kick their pretend ball. Each manner we go over the students will act out a different sport.
Then I explain different situations that might happen in class and the students will tell me what manner I am not following in the situation. So when a student displays inappropriate behaviors or makes a poor choice. I will ask then to go stand under the manner they think they should be doing at that time. I will go over to the student after about a minute and ask them why they were asked to stand under the manners. After going through a quick plan with the student they are asked to join back into the activity.
Assessment Ideas:
I check to make sure the students are standing under the right manner. I verbally ask them several self-reflecting questions of their choices and behaviors. And students are given another chance to make better choices and display better behaviors.
Teaching Suggestions:
Display large pictures of the manner so all students can read.
Have an aide or student buddy help read/explain the different manner so that the student can stand under the proper manner for their behavior.
