Orthopedic Impairments
I have a student on my caseload who has osteogenesis imperfecta. The physical education provider (a contracted provider, but not credentialed) does not welcome this student in her class. This student is very intelligent, advocates for himself very well, and has good motor skills. Am I correct in assuming that this student can and should be in his general physical education class with his peers? I have provided appropriate equipment, have given adaptations for those units that involve impact, etc. I have handed out the excellent articles and help-sheets. I have the parent's support, as well as the principal's. What else can I do aside from attending every physical education class with the student?

Adapted PE
Laws/Policies
One of the issues I have been having as an adapted physical education teacher is that students are being placed in this class simply because they " don't want to change into gym clothes". Many students know that they can get placed in the lower intensity adaptive class if they refuse to change or refuse to run the mile for the fitness testing.

This class has several students with classified disabilities as per state education guidelines; some of these students are severely disabled and need these services. My view on this is that unless a student is identified on an IEP they should not be placed in the adaptive class. Do you have any suggestions for how I should handle this situation?

Adapted PE
Assessment
The district Special Education Coordinator has instructed me to use the evaluation that the Physical Therapist has conducted on a student for me to write my Adaptive Physical Education goals. She has told me that it is not my job to write goals for my adaptive physical education students. I know this is very wrong. What suggestions do you have?

Adapted PE

Profound/Severe Disabilities
I am a preschool adapted physical education teacher. I have a new student for ape who has been diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Syndrome (Type II). She has significant gross motor delays and tires in her legs very easily. Can you suggest some activities or exercises/stretches to do with her? I have been to the Arnold Chiari websites and understand what it is, but not exactly sure how to get the most of ape for this particular girl.

Adapted PE

How do I know which assessment tool to use when determining if a student qualifies for APE? I've looked at the popular scales used for assessing students with disabilities, but which do I use? Where do I start?

Adapted PE
Laws/Policies
My son receives adapted physical education from his regular Lifeskills classroom teacher who is not certified to teach PE or coach. Is this legal or proper? I am trying to get the school to have someone with "training" teach my son and the school district is not willing.

Laws/Policies
I am very concerned our school district will drop adapted physical education during the middle school years. My son has mild autism and does not feel comfortable playing sports. He is not very coordinated and has low self-esteem in this area.

Last year, our school district discontinued physical therapy. My son is now transitioning to middle school and I have concerns. It is written in his IEP that he is entitled to receive APE. Can you give me concrete reasons why APE is important to child with autism transitioning to a new school.

Profound/Severe Disabilities
My questions involves the 3 severely disabled classes (Pre-K, 1st-3rd, and 4th-6th). The Pre-K class is basically a therapy class, I am constantly motoring them through everything. The 1st-3rd class is a constant behavior driven class, and 4th-6th is half active and half out to lunch. We practice a lot of fundamental motor skills in all classes. At this point I feel I am meeting their goals, but I am bored, the aides are bored, and the kids might be bored. How can I spice things up with my classes?

Adapted PE
Laws/Policies
My son has been diagnosed with ADHD. He is doing well in his academic classes but is struggling in physical education class. Consequently he is in time out alot-- in face they have had him in a special time out for the last two weeks. He is not really participating in physical education but rather made to sit out and watch the other children. What can I do?

Adapted PE
Visual Impairment
I would like to build a running line for a student with a visual impairment to use for running independently. Are there any parameters that I should keep in mind? What materials would work the best?

Wheelchair Users
I have a student that is in the fifth grade and uses an electronic wheelchair. My class size is 45 and i am the only teacher. The main problem is that he cannot move his body from the neck down. The wheelchair is moved with his neck and can barely hold anything in his mouth. Very intelligent boy and he would like to come to p.e but how do I include him? I'm doing cup stacking and wanted something for his mouth to see if he could move them, in tag games I can put a foam arm on the chair and he can tag the other students. He also he has an educational aide.

Autism
I teach two classrooms of children with autism. Students in the classrooms are low functioning and non-verbal. After much trial and error I find that they like to be outside. I have a large fenced-in field with benches and bleachers for balance, going up and down, and jumping. We also have a rope grid(that football players use for agility) and some large truck tires that they like to walk around. We take a half mile walk as we utilize these obstacles and spend the last 5 minutes in a playground climbing and swinging. The students seem very happy and calm during this activity. Do you think this is an appropriate activity for this type of group? Please give me any other suggestions.

Adapted PE

Adapted PE
Orthopedic Impairments
I have a female student in Grade 1 with Type 1 Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone syndrome). She has three compressed vertebrae in her thoracic spine. She needs to limit 'high impact' movements and avoid the possibility of impact with other students. However, it is also imperative that she load bear to help keep bone density. What types of adaptive gross motor activities would you suggest that we incorporate into her replacement physical education program that will be delivered in a small group setting?

Adapted PE
Down Syndrome
I have a third grade girl with Down Syndrome. She is very far behind the other students in her class. What can I do to help her? She most often refuses to work with us and will sit down and yell and scream when we try to get her up to do any physical activity.

Adapted PE
Laws/Policies
I am currently in my 20th year of employment with a SED Joint Agreement (Cooperative). Can physical therapy (a related service) be carried out during a child's regular PE class or at another time separate from the child's PE time as I believe. Both disciplines are working on the same goals, but I don't believe that legally PT can come in to a PE class and deliver service. Am I correct about this?

Adapted PE
Behavior/Emotional Disorders
I teach a physical education/health education program to emotionally impaired students. The students were placed in this school for: drug use, behavior problems, or they were taken away from their families due to domestic problems or neglect. The school has no gym, we do have a weight room, out-door track, out-door basketball court and track. The problem is the weather, we are located just outside of Detroit. I am looking for some phys ed ideas I can do this winter?

Adapted PE
Assessment
I am a licensed adapted physical education teacher and was asked by the special education director to do a gross motor skills assessment on one of the students at theschool. I chose the TGMD 2 but I have forgotten how to score the subtests. Is it a scale of 1-5 or a scale of 1-3? Is 1 the lowest and 5 the highest or the other way around?

Adapted PE
Physical Disabilities
I have a student in the fifth grade who is a little person. He is fully functional, just short. I would like some ideas on how to adapt activities for the other students so it is fair for him and he can succeed. Or some activities that would focus on 'personal best' performance for all students but still be fun and active for all.

Adapted PE
Adaptations for Physical Activities
I have a child on my softball team who is in need of a special glove. Due to a birth defect, she is missing some fingers on her left hand, making the use of a traditional glove difficult. Do you know of any equipment we can find to help her?
