This site contains advice toward a long-term commitment to many types of walking, such as race walking, power walking and even marathon walking. Some issues stressed on the site include the importance of cross training, ways to avoid knee injuries and setting up a program that will strengthen your leg muscles. There are some nutritional tips and stretching exercises to follow as well.
Volksmarching is a non-competitive six mile walk that originated in Europe. There are Volksmarching clubs in the United States that host walking events. Walking events normally take place on nature trails that are safe, of scenic interest or historical, naturally beautiful, and of good "walkability". Check out this site and see how Volksmarching can be simply adapted and incorportated into your program. It has great potential for interdisciplinary use in your program. Included in the Volksmarching and Walking Index is a vocabulary list and a historical background to Volksmarching. This web site could very easily be incorporated into an Internet project where students go to this site and report about the major highlights to Volksmarching prior to participating in the event.
Walk Our Children to School Day is a day when school children from across the world walk to school together rather than taking the bus or getting a ride in the car to school (last year over 300,000 kids walked!) It promotes physical fitness, as well as pedestrian safety.
