Week 33: May 5-9, 1997

IA Name: Free To Be

Grade Level: Kindergarten - 5th grade

Equipment: Cassette tape or CD, and a Cassette and/or CD player

Directions:

Have the children find a self space. Once they have found a self space have them begin to travel in general space by walking when the music begins. When the music changes beat they are to change the method of travel such as leaping, skipping, hopping, galloping, etc. Classical music has been used successfully for this activity, but any music that provides changes of beat may be used as long as it is approved and appropriate for your school.

Variations

  • Younger children may need the teacher to guide them in this activity by telling them what new method to travel they would like them to use when the beat changes. This may be done by telling them out loud or by holding up a sign with the new method of travel written on it.

    Teaching Tips

  • Always start with the children walking to make sure they can travel safely in general space before changing the method of travel.
