IA Name: Jump Rope Exploration

Grade Level: 2nd and Up

Equipment: Cones for general space, individual jump ropes

Directions:

Before students arrive for class spread out individual jump ropes (of different lengths if you have them) throughout the playing area. As soon as students arrive have them find a jump rope. When the music starts (or on teachers signal) they can jump rope in any fashion that they choose.

For example, they could make shapes with the rope on the floor and practice jumping over and in the rope, or they can jump rope in the normal way by turning it over their head. If you want them to jump with a partner that is fine also.

This activity can last as long as the teacher wants it to. This is a great time to assess what students have learned about ropeskipping.

Assessment Ideas

  • To help teachers assess students jump rope abilities use our Cue Checklist Sheet.

  • To assess what children have learned and like/dislike about their jump roping abilities use our Jump Rope Assessment Sheet that you can use with your students after they are done with the Instant Activity.
