IA Name: Movin' to the Drum

Grade Level: 1st and Up

Equipment: Cones for general space

Directions:

Have the students find a good self space in general space. Tell them that they are going to move in general space any where they want but they have to move to the drum beat. On the teachers signal have students start to walk in general space looking for open space.

Teacher starts to beat the drum at any speed and the children are to take a step on every drum beat. Explore different speeds especially the slow speeds (they don't like going slow!). Have fun with this by turning the drum stick around and beating the drum with the handle--this means they have to tip toe.

Variations

  • Have them try different locomotor movements
  • Have them move in different directions
  • Older students can work in groups of two to three to see if they can stay together
