Media Center with Media Specialist is ideal! Notebook
of Brochures & Booklets collected by the Health Teacher. A Handout for each
student. A videotape per class plus one extra (our cable company is a VIP -
business partner and gives us tapes). A video camera on tripod and a sample
videotape of PSAs (may be obtained from local cable company or tv station).
An overhead projector for directions, handout, and list of topics.
Directions:
#1. We work as a team with the Media Specialist in the media center for
this activity. It takes about 5 days to complete if 45 to 50 minute
periods. The Media Specialist introduces what a PSA is and shows example
tape of PSAs. After the first year we did this, we were able to show
examples of student-made PSAs.
#2. Our Specialist then explains the handout and what is expected of the
students to complete the assignment. We explain how the project is graded.
Points may be given for each part of the assignment to fit your grading
system. (Click here to See Grading Sheet)
#3. The Specialist will then share various sources and places to look in
the media center for the 10 facts. We explain our notebook that has been
compiled of various brochures and booklets on the various topics.
These are placed in plastic sheet protectors to make storage in a notebook
easier. (Click here to See Fact Sheet)
#4. Various topics are then shown on the overhead to choose from. We then have students take 5 - 10 minutes to sign up and get started. Topics can
be made to fit the number of students and your needs. Examples include Places
to turn to for help, Positive activities to do instead of drugs, Drugs &
Sports, and Drinking & Driving.
#5. Students work on facts for remainder of 1st day. The second and third day is spent completing facts, developing PSA, and rehearsing PSA.
Video taping is done on the 4th and 5th day by the Specialist. Students can
choose to be on tape that only teacher sees and reviews or on tape where
entire class views. We are forturnate to have a room for this in the media
center. Students must turn in Script sheet prior to taping. (Click here to See Script Sheet)
#6. Other activities can be done individually by the students while they
are waiting to be taped or are done taping.
#7. When back in classroom, we share tapes that students may view. We also share about individual projects and discuss facts we discovered. A small
vcr/TV is checked out from media center and placed in back of classroom.
Students may then view their project individually and privately while class
is working on something else.
