Name of Activity:
Purpose of Activity:Students will elevate their heartrates while practicing chasing, fleeing, and dodging skills. The game will teach how the blood flows and carries oxygen from the lungs to the heart and to the body (muscles) to create energy.
Prerequisites:Chasing, fleeing, and dodging skills, such as looking up to avoid collisions, and using arms and legs to fake and change directions quickly when fleeing.
Suggested Grade Level:3-5
Materials Needed:One flag belt for each student with one (red) flag, a bucket of extra red flags, hula hoops, hurdles, cones, and noodles (tunnels for obstacle course of the heart), posterboard and markers for signs, cones for boundaries.

Description of Idea
Game Set-up: The playing area should be set up with a large area for the tag game that represents "the body" and a smaller area (preferably a long thin area at the end of the game area) where an obstacle course can be set up that will represent "the heart and lungs".
To Build the Obstacle Course:
- Build a tunnel with an arch (using hula hoops or noodles). Label with a blue sign that say " 'Right Atrium - walk or crawl"
- Tunnel labeled with a blue sign reading " 'Tri cuspid valve to the Right Ventricle - walk or crawl "
- Tunnel labeled with a white sign reading "to the lungs"
- Place a bucket of extra flags in the lung area
- Hurdle labeled with a white sign reading "Exit the lungs"
- Hurdle labeled with a red sign reading " 'Left Atrium - jog and move fast"
- Hurdle labeled with a red sign reading " 'Bicuspid valve to the Left Ventricle - jog or move fast"
- Hurdle labeled with a red sign reading "To the Body", with an arrow directing the traveling path to the tag playing area - "the body".
Playing the Game:
After explaining the flow of blood and how oxygen is carried from the heart and lungs to the muscles to create energy, you are ready to explain the game. All students that have on one belt and one red flag are "oxygenated blood". Choose 4-6 taggers to be "muscles" who have on a belt with no flag. At the start of the game, they are all "oxygenated blood" with one flag on their belt, moving through "the body" (the tag area). The "Muscles" try to take the oxygen from the blood (redflags) to create energy. If a "muscle" takes a player's oxygen (red flag), then the player becomes "deoxygenated blood" and must leave "the body" and travel though "the heart" (obstacle course) beginning at the right atrium, to the right ventricle, then to the lungs where he will pick up "oxygen" (one red flag) and re-flag himself. He is now oxygenated and can travel to the left atrium, left ventricle and then to "the body" (tag area) and is back in the game.
Change "muscles" every 2 minutes. It is helpful to have a chart or poster diagram of the heart up on your wall in the gym during your demonstration and explanation.
You can add arteries, and veins to the obstacle course as well as have students travel by walking when deoxygenated, jogging when oxygenated to relay relationship of blood flow in the body.You could also add tricuspid valve and bicuspid valve to the obstacle course to help teach students the identification of sections of the heart.
Students will be able to explain the flow of blood through the heart, lungs and body. Trace the blood flow on a diagram provided by the teacher. Explain the purpose of various heart parts: veins, arteries, oxygenated blood, etc.
