Purpose of Event: The purpose is for the teacher to assess if the students understand that the defensive player should be closer to the basket than the offensive player when playing man-defense in basketball.
Suggested Grade Level: 6-8
Description of Idea
After the teacher explains and demonstrates the man-defense concept, have the students play a small or regular sized game of basketball. Every once in a while, the teacher stops the game. The students freeze. Each defensive player checks his/her positioning and puts a tally mark in the appropriate column on the sheet provided below. Do this process several times throughout the game.
Upon completion of the game have the students answer the last two questions on the assessment sheet.
