Name/Title: Throwing the Odds (and Evens!)

Academic content: Math

Purpose of Event: To help reinforce the concept of odd and even numbers by using over- and underhand throws.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of overhand and underhand throws.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: for each set of partners: bean bag or large Nerf ball, plastic cup, cut up pieces of paper with the numbers 1-20

Physical activity: Throwing (overhand and underhand)

Description of Idea

This activity is to be completed after a discussion of even and odd numbers. Students will take turns drawing a number out of their cups and verbalizing to their partner whether the number is an odd or even number. If they draw an even number, they throw underhand to their partner. If they draw an odd number, they throw overhand. The number of throws is determined by the number on the piece of paper. Each release of the ball is considered a throw. The partners should continue the activity until all of their paper slips are out of the cup. Students should be instructed to try their best to get the ball to their partner, so that their partner does not have to chase the ball. They should take the first piece of paper drawn and not dig for a certain number in the cup.


For younger students, have the students throw at a target, as opposed to their partners, and use numbers 1-10 instead of 1-20. For older students, increase the distance between the students to 15 to 20 feet, and make all of the slips of paper in their cups problems (5+4=_) instead of just the answer.

Assessment Ideas:

Walk around and observe students completing the activity. You should be able to tell if they can differentiate between odd and even easily.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Assign the student with a disability a partner to throw and catch from a closer distance, if necessary. If there is a student with an auditory impairment, a soft, noise making ball can be used.
