PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Healthy Heart

Category: Health

Suggested Grade Level: 3-8

Materials: Enlarged 3-D heart, How the heart works story, diagram of the heart, student samples of the blood flow through the heart, cut out words

In order to reemphasize how the heart works during a circulatory system unit, this bulletin board was created. Students were given ownership to this bulletin board as well. During warm-up centers, students traced the blood flow of both viens and arteries through the heart. Afterwards, students played a artery and vein tag to reinforce the idea of oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood. The hearts that were traced with the blood flow, were cut out and posted onto this bulletin board to show student work in Health & PE. The heart story was also read to each class.

Additional Information:

In order to create a 3-D heart, print an outline of the heart onto a transparency and trace it on a large peice of bulletin paper. Staple the edges. Before closing the "heart" up, stuff newspaper into the heart so that it becomes rounded. When done, staple the rest of the "heart".
