Title of Bulletin Board: South Grove's Lifesavers
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials: A banner with your school name and "lifesavers" on it, a bunch of heart cut-outs
Students were studying heart disease and stroke during our Jump Rope for Heart event. Students quickly learned that we are all affected by heart disease and stroke. Many students have lost someone in their immediate family, others have family members who are surviving, while others witnessed how their friends are affected and therefore those students were supporters. As a result, we used our "South Grove Lifesavers" wall to express WHY we raise money for the American Heart Association through Jump Rope for Heart. Students were given 1 heart cut out and were to put either, IN HONOR OF / IN MEMORY OF / BOTH and the name(s) of people they know have been affected by heart disease or stroke. Then the students were given tape to place their heart on the wall with the rest of the school. This helped make our fundraiser more "REAL" to the students. Jump Rope for Heart was no longer ONLY about the prizes, but rather about helping others affected by the disease and in hopes of finding a cure.
