Title of Bulletin Board: Walking Club Mileage Map

Category: Running/Walking Clubs

Suggested Grade Level: K-8

Materials: US Map, string, letters, page protectors, mileage numbers

This was put up to show the overall total miles walked for the school. Students walk laps at lunch and I keep a running total for each student and for the school as a whole. The map shows us starting at our state capitol and walking from capitol to capitol. I use string and staples to mark our path, and write the distance between points next to the string segment. Every 1000 miles, I have an announcement in the morning informing the school how far we have walked.

In addition, every 10 miles a student completes, they get to put a shoe on the wall to show how far they have gone. I have signs up throughout the gym showing 'Mile Clubs'. When students return their colored shoe, I put it up next to the mile club that corresponds with their current distance. The farther the mile club, the larger the shoe gets.
