PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: If You Give A Kid A Kickball...

Category: Common Core in PE

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials: Bulletin Board Paper, Stapler, Construction Paper, Die cutter, projector, Books: If you give a mouse a cookie, If you give a pig pancakes, If you give a moose a muffin, and a google image of a boy

The bulletin board has a green background with a white piece of bulletin board paper at a diagonal angle. Red letters are placed on the white sheet at a angle to represent a sheet of paper. The board is mimicking the cover of "If you give a Mouse a Cookie." A red crayon is traced and placed at the end of the white sheet of paper as if it just wrote the sentence "If you give a kid a kickball." Below the the white sheet are the characters, the mouse holding a cookie, a moose with a muffin, and a pig with a plate of pancakes. In the middle of the characters I placed the kid with the kickball. At the top in the open area on the green, I placed in small black letters "He'll want others to come play."
Another option is to substitute the "cookie, a muffin, and a pancake" with fruit. Additionally, you could leave out the "He'll want the others to come and play" and have students finish the tag line after "If you give a Kid a Kickball..."
The bulletin board was built to show that physical activities can be more fun with others. The boy will have more fun if he has others to play with and not be alone. The purpose was to combine common core with PE and present the idea as a book that all elementary school students can relate. The students will see the correlation of the book and participating in physical activities. They will see that reading can be fun and be incorporated into PE. The books can be read at any given time or you can plan accordingly with the media coordinator. The students were also very proud to say they have read that book last year or they were able to read that book all by themselves this year. Also the students who may have never read the book but see the bulletin board or hear others talking about it, may be very interested in reading "If you give a Mouse a cookie," "If you give a Pig pancakes" and "If you give a Moose a Muffin." Therefore the bulletin board can promote literacy.
