PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Math is Everywhere

Category: Common Core in PE

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: Pictures, Construction Paper

This board was created with a 4th Grade teacher. We created this board to point out to our students how math is used every day, and incorporating PE into this board was a great way to integrate PE and Math. Our hope was that this bulletin board would help students have some fun with math and be able to help them relate to it in a different way.

Most of the pictures on the bulletin board are pictures of something in the gym, or of our PE equipment. We took pictures of some PE stuff and put them on the bulletin board along with the corresponding word. Some of the pictures and words include, Square - picture of the tile on the ground,
Line Segment – red and white bowling carpet
Trapezoid – box holding PE equipment
Quadrangle – lights in the gym
Parallel Lines – doorway to my office
Obtuse Angle – stage in the gym
Polygon – clipboards we use in PE class

There are some other pictures of areas of the gym posted on the board along with the corresponding math word. This board has opened up students eyes to relating math and PE when they come to class. For example, I once used the volleyball net in class and a student pointed out that the volleyball net has Intersecting Lines, which was something posted on the bulletin board. We were also once using beanbags and the students instantly pointed out that they were square shaped.
