PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Track & Field Meet

Category: Special Events

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: Previous Event Pictures, Construction Paper

There are 3 elementary schools in my district and every Spring, the 5th & 6th graders in our district get together, along with the middle school and high school track coaches, at our high school’s track facility for a Track & Field Meet. This board was created to promote the upcoming event as well as educate the students on the events they have the option of doing and what a Track & Field Meet looks like. There are pictures of the previous year’s Track and Field event on the board. The letters, and background on the pictures, are in purple because those are our uniform colors and I put the background in green because last year our school started bringing more awareness to recycling and living a green life, and I looked at this as an subtle way to reinforce that message.

In the middle of the board, is a list of all the running & field events that our students have the option of doing, as well as the co-ed 4x100 relay race. Due to the large numbers at the event, the rule is that each student is only allowed to do 1 running event and 1 field event, which they must sign up for prior to the event.

The 6 big, bold words on the board all represent, in short, what we hope the students can take away from this event. It has served as a great application to a Track & Field unit, it has also been a good community service opportunity for middle school and high school track athletes, as some of them volunteer to help run the event.
