PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Sticks Down, Heart Rates Up

Category: Health

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: Butcher paper, construction paper, sharpie, scissors, stapler, glue stick

This bulletin board was constructed to remind students what we want in a good floor hockey unit. Teaching cues for holding the stick are: 1) Thumbs are to point down along the shaft, and 2) shoulder should be down over the blade which keeps it down and the stick is to stay down below knees. If those are done correctly the only thing that should be up is the student's heart rate. During a game the whistle is blown and the teacher yells heart check and students then take their pulse then the game resumes. We have the hockey player donning our local team's jersey the Washington Capitals and we also have a Cap's player coming in to do a demonstration for the students. As the unit progresses we will be awarding Stanley Cups cutouts to kids who have awesome skills and participation. The kids will be able to staple up their Cup to the bulletin board and get a little recognition.
