Name of Best Practice: Easter Egg Orienteering Hunt
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To develop map reading skills and teamwork.
Suggested Grade Level: 2-8
Materials Needed: A simple map of the school grounds would do either in black and white or color, 6-8 easter egg baskets and enough eggs in each basket that would allow each group to pick one.
Easter Egg Orienteering Hunt
This event takes place just before Easter. Basically what happens it classes participate as a group in an easter egg hunt using a map to find the location of the easter eggs. The classes assemble at interval starting times (5-10 minutes apart). The courses are pre-drawn by the instructor on the map and the baskets would have been placed out at the locations marked on the map already. After some instruction on map reading and orientation of the map the groups would be sent off to find the eggs with an adult supervisor. When the class would return with an egg from each basket location, they would be instructed to eat the eggs before their time would stop. Salt and pepper with water would be provided at the end also. The class with the fastest time would get to hold the traveling trophy for the year as Easter Egg Orienteering Champs.
