Evergreen School District Elementary PE Showcase
Organization: Each of our 18 elementary schools participate which includes our Adapted PE program. We use one of the high school gyms for our showcase and the event lasts about 2 hours. We have a guest speaker open our showcase and then we begin our performances. The perimeter of the gym is set up like a health fair with tables for community organizations: health clubs, YMCA, local bowling alley, school nurses, Red Cross, etc. The basketball court is used for the PE performances. We have one of the PE teachers MC the event (announce door prizes and intro each school & activity). Performances: The PE teacher from each school brings about 20-30 students to the event and they have 4 minutes to demonstrate an activity (each school demonstrates something different). We divide the schools up into groups of 2 for a total of 10 groups. We have two activities going on at the same time, side by side on the basketball court. Each year we try to offer new ideas, here are some of the activities we have showcased: square dancing, physio ball routines, unicycling, step aerobics, line dancing, parachute, juggling, soccer, rollerblading, ribbon routines, orienteering, omnikin, etc. For our finale we bring all kids on to the court and we all do a line dance together. It's amazing to see almost 400 people dancing in unison! We are going on our 5th year, and get about 2000 spectators a year, including parents, district personnel, media, and other people from the community. This has been a huge success for us and really promotes our program to the community.
Variations:
In the past we have allowed time at the end of the event for hands-on time to "play & participate" with the various pieces of equipment.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
We write a grant each year to get funds to purchase door prizes and give out the prizes between each performance (allows time for transitions between groups). As spectators enter the gym we hand them a numbered ticket and keep the matching side. Winners must be present to claim prizes.
