Name of Best Practice: Family Fitness Night

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To help make our parents and students aware of the healthy lifestyle opportunities and to encourage them to begin thinking about a fitness path they may wish to pursue.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Program, List of professional volunteers, P.E. equipment for an obsticle course, tables/chairs, training for students with cup stacking, Letters/envelopes/stamps - to send confirmations/thank you's.

Family Fitness Night

On Fitness Night I had 14 stations set up for parents and students to visit. Examples include:


  • Pediatrician

  • Local Hospital

  • Will County Department of Health

  • Police Department

  • Fire Dept

  • Lifetime Fitness Club

  • Joliet Junior College Fitness Center

  • Local High School Athletes

  • Students demonstrating cup stacking

  • Dance station

  • Local martial arts instructor and a master fitness specialsit

  • Obsticle course was set up for students and parents to work through


The PTO donated a nutritous snack for each visitor. Over 200 people attended so I will hold it again next year with some added features.

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

Have water available for each professional volunteer.

Take a lot of pictures so you can promote again for next year.

Invite the local press to attend.

Hand out documents that support phyisical education like the surgeon generals report or developmentally appropriate documents from NASPE.
