Teacher: Rick Johnson who teaches at Summit Hill Elementary School in Alpharetta, GA. Rick Johnson can be contacted at JohnsonRL@fulton.k12.ga.us.

Name of Best Practice: Big Shoe Award

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To encourage students to wear the proper shoes to physical education class.

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: Poster board, stickers, the largest pair of sneakers that you can find or purchase.

Big Shoe Award

Each time all students in a class wear their sneakers, the class is awarded a sticker for that day. At the end of the month, the class that accrues the most stickers is awarded the "Big Shoe" to be displayed in their classroom until the following month. I keep a chart posted in the gym in order that students may keep up with their progress. One shoe is awarded in grades K-2 and another for grades 3-5. The big shoes at my current school are a pair of size 17 high tops. I have in the past had up to a size 22 and at one school the principal liked the incentive so well she had them mounted on plaques!
