Name of Best Practice: Student of the Month

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To promote good sportsmanship, respect, cooperation, and effort in our physical education class.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Any kind of award (certificate, T-Shirts or some other special award) indicating that the student is the "P.E. Student of the Month."

Student of the Month

Our students are given standards to meet at the beginning of the year. The students that demonstrate excellent effort, cooperation, sportsmanship, respect and the initiative to help others are recognized at the end of the month. I choose one boy and one girl at the end of each month to receive the award -- donated restaurant tokens, a "P.E. Student of the Month" award certificate, and a "P.E. Student of the Month" t-shirt. The t-shirts have been donated by the PTO, so I don't have to pay for them out of my budget.

In addition, I also run a "P.E. Class of the Week". The class that has great behavior and everyone in tennis shoes is given a written award and a stuffed Orca Whale (our mascot) to have in their room for a week. The class with the most awards at the end of the year gets extra P.E. time with me.
