Name of Best Practice: Family Bowling Night

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To engage students and parents in a culminating activity of our bowling unit.

Suggested Grade Level: 1-5

Materials Needed: Plastic Bowling Pins, Rubber/Nerf Bowling Balls, Mats to divide the lanes, floor tape to mark scratch lines and "Arrow" lane markings.

Family Bowling Night

As a culminating event for our bowling unit we invite students and their families for an evening of bowling in our made up bowling alley (called Hillside Bowling Lanes) at our activity room in our school. During the evening, students help their family members to bowl, set up pins and have fun. No scorekeeping is allowed!

The event is open to all families in grades 1-5 on a first come, first serve basis. Families sign up about two weeks ahead of the event for a preferred time, 6-6:30, 6:30-7, 7-7:30, 7:30-8, 8-8:30 PM. Last year was our first year and we had approximately 250 people attend. My teaching partner and I run this event. Some of the classroom teachers stayed to bowl with families in their rooms as well. No walk in's were accepted until all families who had registered were placed in a lane. We have enough bowling equipment to set up 13 lanes across our gym. We load our CD sound system with fun family "Radio Disney" music to be played during the event.

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

Make sure to remind bowlers about the proper underhand rolling technique and using the guide marks on the floor to help students be successful.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Bowling ramps are available for those who need them. Light Nerf balls are also available.
