Teacher: Angie Bryant who teaches at Alpharetta Elementary in Alpharetta, GA. Angie Bryant can be contacted at bryant@fultonschools.org.

Name of Best Practice: Gym "GEMS"

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To give all students an opportunity to be helpers in PE and encourage them to be accountable and responsible for equipment as well as the set up and take down of equipment.

Gym "GEMS"

Students are always asking to be our helpers when we are cleaning up the gym or getting ready to set up for a class. Inevitably, we tend to always pick the "good" kids or the kids who always follow the rules, etc... By having gym "GEMS" we pick two students from each class to be our helpers for the month. This way we have different students each month (allowing for others to be helpers) and all we have to say is "Gym GEMS need to see us!" We don't have to pick helpers every day and we don't have tons of kids running up to us asking to be our helpers. We have a Gym GEMS poster outside the gym where we put the current month's helpers' pictures up. It has been an easy and helpful program to incorporate into our PE class.
