Name of Best Practice: Weekend Exercise Journal
Rationale/Purpose of Event: The purpose of this project is to have students to sign out the PE Journal (volunteer basis)and take it home over the weekend. During that weekend, the student will be encouraged to journal/write about their exercise done over the weekend. We will be stressing that family exercise would be great to write about in the journal.
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials Needed: A journal notebook. Plastic bag to keep the journal protected.
Weekend Exercise Journal
During the weekend, the student will be encouraged to journal/write about their exercise accomplished over the weekend. We will be stressing that family exercise would be great to write about in the journal. As the PE teacher, I will be the first example to write in it. Each weekend it would go home with a student and returned on Monday morning. I would encourage writings, poems, and drawings related to exercise. Pictures were used as well!! I have asked several teachers and staff to also participate. Students have enjoyed reading about what other families do for weekend exercise.
Variations:
The journal could be set up on-line where the student could log into and then add to it. Have 8-10 journals to check out so more entries can be made.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Keep the journals in one location.
In my case it is my PE office.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:
Parents and staff members could help write for their students and about their experiences.
