Name of Best Practice: Century Cardio Club

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To provide additional opportunities for students to become physically active in a safe and fun environment.

Suggested Grade Level: 6-12

Materials Needed: We use our Weight Room facility that has free weights, versa bars (body bars), an olympic bar, curl bar, training bar on squat rack, resistance bands, aerobic boxs, medicine balls, and some awesome Cardio equipment from KidsFit. You can use just about any equipment the imagination desires to create a Cardio Circuit that will provide 30 min. of combined cardio and strength exercised.

Century Cardio Club

The club is open to all Century Middle School Students to participate in 30 minutes of cardiovascular activities that will help students improve and/or maintain a healthy active lifestyles, not to mention, prepare them to be better learners.

I lead and instruct students on the proper use of the new cardio equipment as well as provide them with different ways to keep cardio workouts fun!!

* We open the gym usually in the morning. (September – May: 7:45a.m. – 8:15 a.m.)
* Students may just show up ready to participate @ the weight room each morning.
* Students will have to sign –up for the day(s) that they plan to attend IF SPACE BECOMES LIMITED! Space will limited to only 20 students on a daily basis. If this occurs a new sign-up will be posted every Friday for the following week. Any student may sign-up for any day that is still available throughout the week.
* Recognition of these students and all their hard work can be given at the end of each Quarter to those who have attended the Cardio Club for a certain number of times.
* “The Top Panthers”: Attended 15 or more times
* “The Practicing Panthers”: Attended 9 or more times
* “The Curious Panthers”: Attended 1-8 times in a quarter
* Every time a student attends they get to put their name into a drawing for a prize at the end of each quarter! (student council will provide 2 prizes each quarter?)

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

My school also provides the Cardio Club after school as part of the 8th hour after school program. You just have to have someone willing to put in the extra time for free.

The after school program is attended more than the morning so if you are able to choose the best time to do it, the afternoons are more popular.
