Name of Best Practice: FIT - Families In Training

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To provide a series of events that encourage children and their families to engage in fun fitness activities.

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: PTA and community volunteers

FIT - Families In Training

"FIT" is a fitness program with an emphasis on family participation. FIT provides fun events intended to encourage family togetherness with activities designed to help keep us healthy and fit.

Several times during the school year activities are planned using different locations within our school district. Emphasis is on family participation. Events include:


  1. one mile fun run/jog

  2. hike through a wooded park

  3. winter swim

  4. school dance

  5. aerobics

  6. yoga

  7. 5k bike/hike

  8. orienteering

  9. family field day


Individuals who participate in five of the events are awarded an original "FIT" prize.
